Y-D: 3, Brewster: 6

FIFTH INNING MISTAKES HAND BREWSTER A 6-3 WIN OVER YD

Coming off a hard fought win against Orleans the previous day, the YD Red Sox (7-8-2) were once again tested at home versus the Brewster Whitecaps (8-6-1). In their first meeting of the season, the Whitecaps defeated the Red Sox in a close 1-0 game at Stony Brook Field in Brewster. YD looked to even the season series but came up short in their 6-3 loss.

High pitch counts for both starting pitchers led to the use of a combined eleven pitchers over the course of the game. James Lomangino started for the Red Sox, entering the game with a 2-0 record and a 0.95 ERA in 19 innings this season. Lomangino lasted just three innings while giving up four hits and two runs.

Lomangino’s lone two earned runs came on solo shots by Whitecaps right fielder Preston Beck and shortstop Jack Mayfield, the ninth hitter. Mayfield lead off the top of the third inning with a monster shot over the wall in left center field. It was the first of the year for the Brewster shortstop who stands just under six feet tall.

YD evened the score in the bottom half of the third inning with two outs. After a walk by center fielder James Ramsey, a double by clean up man Mason Katz scored Ramsey from first. Ramsey has been showing off his speed (and power) since he arrived on the Cape almost a week ago, which was displayed in his ability to score easily from first base. Cody Keefer followed with another walk, and Matt Reynolds drove in the tying run with a single to bring the score to 2-2.

More trouble brewed for YD in the top of the fifth during relief man Joe Rogers’ second inning of work. A lead off single by Whitecaps center fielder Andrew Toles put him on base and a sacrifice bunt moved him over to second. Rogers struck out Beck looking for the second out of the inning and closed in on escaping the jam. During the next at-bat, however, Toles made a break for third and was called safe on a very close play. Coach Pickler made his argument with the third base umpire but to no avail.

An out call on that play would’ve have ended the inning and halted the Whitecaps attack, yet Toles scored on a pass ball and the next batter, Taylor Davis, walked. Brewster third baseman, Danny Hayes, singled and when attempting to advance to second, a throwing error by Red Sox third baseman Jacob Lamb allowed Davis to score and extend the Whitecaps lead to 4-2. Mistakes continued for YD as a pass ball allowed Hayes to advance to third, and he scored on a wild pitch bringing the Brewster advantage to 5-2.

YD would not be able to climb back from this deficit. Brewster pitching was avoiding big hitter Ramsey (four walks on the day) and Katz’s two doubles and two RBIs were not enough to power the Red Sox to a win on their own. YD grabbed one run back in the bottom of the seventh via a Ramsey walk and a subsequent Katz double cutting the lead to 6-3 after Brewster had scored their sixth run in the top half of the frame.

The Red Sox put two runners on with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but with a chance to tie the game, Keefer grounded back to the pitcher to end the game.

YD has an off day on Thursday and will play the Harwich Mariners at home on Friday. Friday’s game will be followed by a Fourth of July fireworks celebration at Red Mills field.
