FALMOUTH ESCAPES WITH WIN IN GAME DOMINATED BY PITCHING
In a game that barely ran two and a half hours and featured pitchers in top form on both sides, the Falmouth Commodores (7-8) stole a 2-1 win over the YD Red Sox (6-7-2). Late inning runs were the kryptonite for the Red Sox yet again as the Commodores scored one run in the seventh and one run in the ninth to claim the victory.
Zack Weiss took the mound for YD opposed by Sean Hagan for Falmouth. Weiss threw seven strong innings, allowing only one run and scattering eight hits, three of which came in his final inning. Weiss also struck out three and walked three. Similarly, Hagan threw seven innings while giving up one run and five hits.
The lone Red Sox run came in the fourth inning when center fielder James Ramsey drove a line drive home run over the center field wall. Off the bat the ball looked to be a bloop single but the ball carried a long distance to easily carry over the outfield fence.
Falmouth was able to load the bases in back-to-back innings (the 2nd and 3rd) but smart pitching and solid defense on the part of YD was able to squander those situations.
Good defense by both ball clubs was another highlight of the game. Falmouth’s quick center fielder, Kyle VonTungeln, took a couple hits away over the course of the game. He robbed Matt Reynolds of a deep drive to the center field fence in the third inning and Mike O’Neill of a hit in the bottom of the fifth. The Red Sox defense was also able to turn three double plays in the game.
Falmouth was able to tie the score at one in the top of the seventh when a single and a sac bunt got VonTungeln to second base. Commodore shortstop Jack Marder drove in the run with a single down the third base line. Marder went 3-5 on the day with two doubles and both Falmouth RBI’s.
The second Commodore run came in the top of the ninth after a single by ninth hitter Jared King put him on first and a successful hit-and-run placed runners on the corners with no outs. YD relief man Mark Anderson was brought in and struck out the first man he saw looking. Then Marder laid down a beautiful sacrifice squeeze bunt to score the runner from third and give Falmouth a 2-1 lead.
The Red Sox could not work any magic in the bottom half of the frame after Ramsey got on base to begin the inning, the Falmouth closer, Josh Easley, got the next two batters out and Ramsey was caught stealing.
The YD Red Sox play again tomorrow in Orleans and hope to continue their success at Eldredge Park where they played the last game they won three days ago.
