A YD Red Sox team that performed poorly in the first game of a double header against the Wareham Gatemen turned things around to take the second game of the day at Red Mills Field. The Red Sox dropped the first game 7-3 but stormed back to gain a 7-6 win over the Gateman behind a strong offensive surge.
YD took a lead after the third inning 2-1. Chris Serritella blasted his first home run of the season to tie the game 1-1 and two consecutive hit by pitches, a ground out to move the runners over, and a pass ball allowed the second YD run to score.
The YD defense prevented the Gatemen from scoring any runs in a threatening top of the fourth inning. The catcher Derrick Chung gunned out a runner attempting to steal third. Then, with two runners on, a single by Gateman catcher Ty Ross brought a throw to home plate. Chung caught Ross at first, who had taken a wide turn, for the second out and then YD first baseman Mason Katz threw out a Wareham runner trying to score from third to complete a 2-3-2 double play. Zack Weiss made his first start for YD and struggled allowing ten hits and four earned runs through 4 1/3 innings.
Wareham exploded for three runs in the fifth by way of four consecutive hits, including a deep double by second baseman LJ Mazzilli to take a 4-2 lead. The Gatemen were able to load the bases again but another double play by YD prevented them from batting around.
Wareham brought home three more runs in the sixth to break the game open, 7-2. Mazzilli drove in two runs after a walk and a couple errors (the third and fourth of the game for YD) and single brought in the seventh run.
The Gatemen out hit the Red Sox thirteen to three in game one of the double header as Wareham pitcher Luke Farrell pitched seven innings for a complete game. YD was able to string together a couple hits in the bottom of the seventh to score their third run but it wasn’t enough to overcome their four errors and quiet bats throughout the course of the game.
Game 2 fared better for the Red Sox as they held off a late onslaught by the Gateman.
Wareham took an early 1-0 lead after the first inning through two two-out hits. But the Red Sox came back to tie the game in the bottom of the second when Mike O’Neill doubled to deep left, which drove in Chris Serritella from first. YD broke the game open in the bottom of third when a couple singles and a fantastic 11-pitch at-bat for Lamb, which translated into a walk, loaded the bases with no outs. Anthony Melchionda worked a walk for the first run of the inning. Serritella hit into a fielder’s choice and right fielder Cody Keefer laid down a beautiful base-hit bunt up the first base line for another two runs. O’Neill drove in Keefer with a single and his second RBI of the game for the fourth and final run of the inning to give YD a 5-1 lead. Wareham got three runs back in the top of the fifth by leading off the inning with a double sandwiched between a couple singles to close the gap to 5-3. YD relief pitcher, Matt Carasiti, entered the game to get the next two outs before a pass ball allowed the third run of the inning to score and reduce the YD lead to one.
YD starting pitcher, Andrew Thurman, threw four strong innings before getting into a jam in the fifth inning and handing over the game to Carasiti.
The Red Sox scored one run in both the fifth and sixth innings to bring their lead to 7-4. Keefer drove in Melchionda from third who had doubled, while a sacrifice bunt between two Wareham errors brought in the seventh YD run.
Wareham threatened to tie the game in the top of the seventh when a single and a walk put two runners on with one out and a fielder’s choice put runners on first and third. Two Gatemen singles followed to drive in two runs and close the YD lead to one run. Carasiti, pitching in his third inning, got the final Wareham batter to pop out and preserve a 7-6 YD win.
After the split of the double header, the YD Red Sox record sits at 5-4-1. They have an off day Monday and play at home Tuesday against Chatham.
