Y-D: 5, Hyannis: 2

SOX SET OFF SOME EARLY FIREWORKS

The Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox improve to 10-8-2 on the season as they defeated the Hyannis Harbor Hawks by a 5-2 margin on Sunday evening. Joey DeNato (Indiana University) went seven and two thirds for the Sox, allowing just one earned run and striking out two, earning the lefty his second win of the summer. Following a tough opening frame, DeNato showed Y-D that he has the right stuff, facing just 22 batters in the remainder of his stint. Hyannis hurler Jon Moscot (Pepperdine) threw only four and two thirds racking up three earned runs, but sitting down six of the 20 Y-D batters he faced. With the loss, Moscot falls to 1-2 this summer.

Though the Sox were hitting the ball hard, they didn’t catch a break until the second half of the contest. Third baseman Jacob Lamb (Univ of Washington) opened up the fifth inning with a single up the middle. Lamb then advanced to second on a passed ball, giving Y-D a runner in scoring position for only the third time on the afternoon. Derrick Chung (Sacramento State) then followed up with a full count walk, putting the go-ahead run in the base path. Left fielder Cody Keefer (UCLA) loaded the bases with a single through the left side, and the Red Sox then scored their first run of the game as James Ramsey (Florida State) was walked in four pitches.

The Harbor Hawks then decided to relieve Moscot, putting Dietrich Enns (Central Michigan) on the hill, in the difficult but possibly clutch situation (bases loaded with two outs). Designated hitter Mason Katz (LSU) stepped up to the plate leading his squad in hits and runs scored, while sharing the leader’s spot for RBI’s. After watching a couple, Katz struck a line drive into the right-center gap, clearing the bases with his eighth double on the summer, giving Y-D a 4-1 lead.

The Hyannis offense proved no match for the Sox defense through the sixth and seventh innings, as first baseman Anthony Melchionda (Boston College) was involved in both a tough unassisted putout as well as a successful pick-off/run-down situation with DeNato.

In the top of the eighth inning Hyannis was able to secure a few base runners as DeNato neared the end of his outing. However, Matt Reckling (Rice) came in for relief and was able to get his team out of the slight jam with a well fought for “K”. In the bottom half of the frame, right fielder Stephen Piscotty (Stanford) reached on a single up the middle, and later advanced on a wild pitch again giving Y-D a runner in scoring position. Third baseman Jacob Lamb (Washington) took advantage of the situation, cracking one through the middle and scoring Piscotty for his fourth RBI of the season.

The Sox decided to put the ball in the hands of Kyle Hansen (St. John’s) to close out the game, and he was able to do just that. Though Hyannis third baseman Justin Gonzalez (Florida) was able to get a hold of one, sending the ball into someone’s backyard over the left-center fence, Hansen adjusted and was able to finish off the game. Facing four batters, the closer was involved in all three putouts of the inning, including two strikeouts to further increase his team-leading number to 16.

These two teams will faceoff again tomorrow night at McKeon Park in Hyannis with the first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
